space Unでは、セネガル人アーティストセリーニュ・ンバイェ・カマラと日本人アーティスト半澤友美による初の共同展覧会「アンティミテ」を開催いたします。本展は、日本とアフリカを文化的に結び、アートを通して新しい対話を生み出すspace Unの使命を象徴するプロジェクトです。キュレーター：ウセイヌ・ワッドによるこの展示では、二人のアーティストが繊細かつ力強い創造的な対話を繰り広げます。 紙や繊維を素材に制作をする半澤友美は、2024年10月にセネガル・ダカールに滞在し、現地の文化や新たな視点を肌で感じ取りました。同時に、セリーニュ・ムバイェ・カマラはspace Unの吉野レジデンシープログラムに2週間参加しました。異なる大陸で生まれ育った二人のアーティストが、文化を超えた対話を通じて、アートの持つ無限の可能性と結びつきの力を提示します。この展覧会は、space Unにとって、日本とセネガルのアーティストを同時に紹介する初の試みであり、アフリカとアジア間に新たな文化の架け橋を築く貴重な一歩です。
space Un is proud to present Intimité (Intimacy), the first collaborative exhibition between Senegalese artist Serigne Mbaye Camara and Japanese artist Tomomi Hanzawa. This exhibition exemplifies space Un's mission to bridge Japan and Africa through culture and foster new dialogues through art. Curated by Ousseynou Wade, the exhibition highlights a delicate yet powerful creative exchange between the two artists. Tomomi Hanzawa, who works with paper and fiber materials, spent October 2024 in Dakar, Senegal, immersing herself in the local culture and gaining fresh perspectives. Meanwhile, Serigne Mbaye Camara participated in space Un’s Yoshino Residency Program for two weeks, engaging with the unique context of rural Japan. Despite coming from continents apart, the two artists have explored and presented the boundless potential of art as a medium for cultural connection and dialogue. This exhibition marks a significant milestone for space Un, as it is the first project to simultaneously feature both Japanese and Senegalese artists, laying the groundwork for a deeper cultural bridge between Africa and Asia.

For the past few years, having tea and talking with my grandmother has become a daily routine. Conversations with my grandmother, who has been diagnosed with dementia, now blend together the present, the past, dreams, and reality into one continuous time, circulating in a way that feels both fluctuating and fixed. As I continue to witness her presence in this fluctuating state, I have come to reflect on the nature of existence itself. I view "paper" not just as a mere support medium, but as an object that inherently contains the human story. While paper is made and used all over the world with a basic manufacturing method that is largely similar, it is actually quite unique. The way it is created varies depending on the place, time, and circumstances of its production. In this context, the act of creating "paper = artwork" becomes a way for me to contemplate existence and the self. The piece I am presenting in this exhibition, titled Self, is made by dripping water-dissolved wood pulp (the raw material of paper) drop by drop using a large pipette, then pressing it to form "paper." I consider each drop as a fragment of an event that occurred over time, or as a solidified representation of "the now." By turning these drops into paper and layering them, I intertwine various moments of "now." While time is often thought of as flowing linearly, I believe it can freely separate and overlap, eventually becoming a multi-layered present that influences the formation of the self. In this exhibition, like my grandmother’s memory, past, future, dreams, and reality all expand and interweave as "multiple presents." Through the "paper" that expands as a work of art, I hope to deepen our contemplation of ourselves and others. November 2023 Tomomi Hanzawa
数年前から、祖母とお茶をして話をするのが毎日の習慣となっています。認知症と診断された祖母との会話は、現在も過去も、夢も現実も1つの時間として混ざり、循環しているようです。揺らぎながらも、確固たる彼女を見続ける中で、その存在について考えるようになっていきました。 私は「紙」をただの支持体ではなく、それ自体が人間の物語を内包する物体として捉えています。世界中で作り、使われ続けている紙は、基本の制作方法は似ているものの、実はとても個性的で、作られた場や時間、状況によって異なる造形物なのです。その上で私は「紙=作品」を作ることが存在や自己への考察につながっています。 今回展示する作品《Self》は、水に溶いた木材パルプ（紙の原料）を大きなスポイトで1滴ずつ垂らし重ね、プレスして「紙」にした作品です。その1滴を経過した時間の中にある出来事の断片、もしくは「今」そのものを固定化したものだと考え、それらを紙にし、またその紙を重ね並べることで、さまざまな「今」を絡み合わせていきます。時間は直線上に流れるものだと捉えられがちですが、自在に遊離し、現在に重層化していくことで、 自己の形成に 影響しているのではないでしょうか。今回の展示では、祖母の記憶のように、過去も未来も、夢も現も「multiple presents/ 複数の今」 として絡み広がる様子を展示します。作品として広がる「紙」により、私たち自身、人について思考を深めることに繋げられたらと思います。 2023年11月 半澤友美

Grab the bubbles

今回発表する新作《泡沫を掴む Grab the bubbles》は、極薄の和紙をパネルの上に現出させた作品です。現れるような、消えていくような和紙の様子を、半澤は『方丈記』に書かれた水に浮かぶ泡沫のような流れていく時間の一端、あるいはわたしたちの「自己」の有りようとして捉え、その儚さと向き合います。
In Tomomi Hanzawa's new work "Grab the Bubbles," she presents ultra-thin washi paper emerging on a panel. The appearance and disappearance of the washi are seen by Hanzawa as a reflection of the flowing nature of time, akin to the fleeting bubbles floating on water in the Hojoki, or as a representation of the ephemeral nature of our "self." Through this, she confronts the transience of existence.
この度、MARUEIDO JAPANでは北林加奈子、半澤友美、山西杏奈『皮膚で「見る」 The Eyes of the Skin』を開催いたします。 本展覧会はフィンランドの建築家で現象学者のユハニ・パラスマー（Juhani Pallasmaa）の『建築と触覚 空間と五感をめぐる哲学』の文中にある「皮膚で〈見て〉いる」という表現から着想を得ています。 北林 加奈子は〈 陶 〉に糸や木、ガラス、ウールなどの異なる素材を掛け合わせる彫刻、インスタレーションを中心に作品を発表しています。肌触りや気配を主題とした作品は、見る者の触覚を刺激し日常の記憶の中にある“何か”を想起させます。 素材と素材との関係、鑑賞者と作品との関係、皮膚の下で呼び起こされる曖昧な記憶こそがリアリティーであることを認識させられます。 半澤友美は、〈 紙 〉の成り立ちに着目し独自の造形作品を創り出しています。植物繊維の絡まりからなる紙は、その原料を幾重にも重ねると強固な物体にもなりえます。半澤は紙漉（ かみすき ）の技法を応用し制作した平面、立体作品、インスタレーションなどを展開してきました。ひとつひとつの繊維が手作業で成形されていく紙と自らの経験とを重ね合わせ、思考を巡らせる中で、作品に時間や記憶などを内在化させていきます。 山西杏奈は、京都を拠点に活動し、〈 木 〉を彫り、布や紐などの日常にある柔らかい「もの」が持つ生の表情、無垢な表情、透明感などに魅力を感じ制作しています。誰もが触れたことのある枕や紐なのどの「もの」の肌、皺など、見過ごしてしまいそうな感覚、瞬間的な時間などを浄化し、滑らかな表情に木の肌を変えていきます。その美しい肌理は自然のエネルギーを内包させて、体の表面で接触している感覚を想起させます。 参考文献 : ユハニ・パラスマー（Juhani Pallasmaa）著『建築と触覚 空間と五感をめぐる哲学』 （2022草思社/百合田香織訳 原題「THE EYES OF THE SKIN Architecture and the Senses」
MARUEIDO JAPAN is pleased to announce the holding of an exhibition called Eyes of the Skin by artists Kanako Kitabayashi, Tomomi Hanzawa and Anna Yamanishi. This exhibition is inspired by the expression "eyes of the skin" from the book The Eyes of the Skin: Architecture and the Senses by Finnish architect and phenomenologist Juhani Pallasmaa. Kanako Kitabayashi mainly presents art, such as sculptures and installations, in which different materials such as yarn, wood, glass and wool, etc., are crossed with . Her art has the theme of tactile properties and sensations that stimulate the tactile sense of the viewer and evoke "something" in everyday memory. Her work makes us realize that reality is the relationship between materials, the relationship between viewers and artworks, and ambiguous memories that are evoked under the skin. Tomomi Hanzawa creates unique sculptural art which is focused on the origins of . She uses the raw materials for paper, which is made from the pulp of plant fibers, and takes that pulp to build up layers to create a solid object. Hanzawa exhibits 2D and 3D works and installations created by applying paper making techniques. The paper, each fiber of which is formed by hand, is overlayered with her own experiences, and within her ponderings, she internalizes time and memories into her work. Anna Yamanishi is based in Kyoto and she mainly uses the material of . She feels the attraction of soft, raw expression, innocent appearance, and transparency, etc., of everyday "things" such as cloth and strings, and creates art. Her motif is the surface of "things" that are familiar to everyone, and she carves smooth expressions into wood as if she is lifting up sensations that may be overlooked, and momentary time, etc. The beautiful grain of the wood encompasses natural energy and evokes the sensation of touching the surface of the body. 群馬県中之条町で開催される、国際現代芸術祭 中之条ビエンナーレ2023に参加します。養蚕が盛んに行われていた中之条町で、その名残として残っている桑の木を採集し、作品にしました。 中之条ビエンナーレは、群馬県中之条町で隔年開催される国際現代芸術祭です。 雄大な山々に囲まれた風景やラムサール条約湿原、長い歴史を持つ温泉郷、養蚕天蚕文化、伝 統が受け継がれる民俗行事や祭事など、中之条町には他では見られない美しい里山文化に触れることが出来ます。アーティストは特色ある山村地域に開かれたアーティスト・イン・レジデンスで滞在制作を行い、その成果を中之条ビエンナーレで発表します。 この度、第9回をむかえる中之条ビエンナーレ2023では、国内外から創造的、革新的なアイデアやプロジェクトをもつ多分野のアーティストが作品を展示します。
The Nakanojo Biennale is an international contemporary art festival held every two years in Nakanojo Town, Gunma Prefecture. Surrounded by magnificent mountain scenery, Ramsar wetlands, hot spring villages with deep histories, sericulture, festivals, and traditional folk events, Nakanojo Town offers visitors the unique opportunity to experience beautiful satoyama culture that cannot be found anywhere else. Artists stay and work in this unique mountain village community and present their creations during the Nakanojo Biennale. Artists live and create on this land and make their own platforms, many new human connections will be born. A big art event with creations by artists and local residents, “The 9th Nakanojo Biennale” will begin soon.

「シン・ジャパニーズ・ペインティング」（ポーラ美術館、神奈川、2023年）のために、横山大観の《生々流転》をなぞらえて制作した作品。和紙の原料である、楮を用いて全長約40m（《生々流転》とほぼ同サイズ）制作した樹皮紙には、認知症になった祖母のメモが複雑に交錯して入れ込まれている。
TThis work was created for the exhibition Shin Japanese Painting (Pola Museum, Kanagawa, 2023) as a response to Yokoyama Taikan's Sei-sei Ruten (Life, Flow, and Change). Using kozo, the material for traditional Japanese paper, a paper made from the bark of trees was created, measuring approximately 40 meters in length (about the same size as Sei-sei Ruten). Embedded within this bark paper are complexly intertwined notes from my grandmother, who has developed dementia.

今から2000年以上も前に発明されて以来、私たちの生活のあらゆる場面に浸透した必要不可欠な素材、「紙」。情報の記録や意思伝達をはじめ、ものを包む、液体を拭う、光をとおす・・・など、その機能と役割は枚挙にいとまがありません。「紙」の幅広い活躍は、しなやかで応用しやすい性質や特長によるものですが、そこには人間が与えた何らかの操作や社会の中で の機能が伴っています。「紙」になるまでも「紙」となってからも、人とのかかわりなしには存在しない素材なのです。 本展ではそのような「紙」「紙製品」に注目し、独自の表現へと昇華させた現代アーティストをご紹介します。彼らの作品は「紙の上に」ではなく、「紙とともに」アイデアを視覚化したものと言えます。誰にとっても馴染みのある「紙」をとおして、本展のアーティストたちが投げかける問いは、私たちを取り巻く世界や価値観を様々な角度から照らし出してくれることでしょう。
Since its invention more than 2,000 years ago, paper has been an indispensable material that has permeated every aspect of our lives. Its functions and roles are innumerable, from recording information and communicating with others to wrapping things, wiping liquids, and transmitting light. The wide range of uses for paper is due to its flexible and easy-to-apply properties and characteristics, but it is also accompanied by some kind of manipulation or function in society that humans have given it. Paper is a material that would not exist without human involvement, both before and after it becomes paper. This exhibition focuses on such "paper" and "paper products" and introduces contemporary artists who have sublimated them into their own unique expressions. Their works can be said to visualize ideas not "on paper" but "with paper. The questions posed by the artists in this exhibition through "paper," which is familiar to everyone, will illuminate the world around us and our sense of values from various angles.
人は日々自分の物語を作っています。1日1日、1秒1秒が複雑に絡み合い、ひとつのチャプターが終わって、また新たなチャプターが始まり、物語は出来ていきます。 近年、半澤友美は「紙の構造と自己の成り立ちを重ね見る」というコンセプトで、紙の原料である植物繊維を使用し作品を制作しています。 植物の繊維は、些細な事、予期せぬ事態、抗えない思い… それらは複雑に重なり、あるいは配列され、紙のごとく面となって現れる様は、一つのチャプターが出来ていくようです。 あてもなく漂うようなチャプター、登場人物の多さに翻弄されるチャプター…過去の自分、これからの自分の物語をのぞき見るように、紙の内側をのぞき見るように、どうぞお楽しみ下さい。 DiEGO
People create their own stories every day. Each day, each second, intricately intertwines, with one chapter ending and a new one beginning, as the story unfolds. In recent years, Tomomi Hanzawa has been creating works using plant fibers, the raw material of paper, based on the concept of "superimposing the structure of paper with the formation of the self." Plant fibers are a complex combination of trivial matters, unexpected situations, and inescapable emotions. They overlap or are arranged in intricate patterns, appearing as a surface just like paper, as if a chapter is being formed. Chapters that seem to drift aimlessly, chapters tossed about by the many characters... Enjoy them as if you were peering into the story of your past and future selves, as if looking inside a piece of paper. DiEGO

この数年、家から出ることがなくなった私の祖母は、毎日食器を選んで並べる。その繰り返しの行為は、彼女の位置を測り、彼女自身の「今」を取り出す「きまり＝儀式（rites）」ではないだろうか。並べられた食器は、儀式によって取り出された「今」の痕跡であり、私たちが普段行う儀式の痕跡を通して、新たな「今」を生み出そうと試みる。
In recent years, my grandmother, who no longer leaves the house, selects and arranges her dishes every day. This repeated act seems to be a "rule = ritual (rites)" through which she measures her position and extracts her own "now." The arranged dishes are traces of the "now" brought forth by the ritual, and through the traces of rituals we usually perform, I attempt to bring forth a new "now."

身の回りにある様々なものを一つの物として認識するためには、そのほとんどを視覚にゆだねています。目に映るものを山と捉えるか、森と捉えるか、一本の木として捉えるかは、山・森・木には明確な境界はなく、ぞれぞれの周囲にある肌理 （テクスチャー）により知覚しています。 両氏の素材や制作過程、フォルムの探究から「肌理と知覚」の関係が現れてきます。半澤友美氏は、紙漉きの手法を用いて、紙の原料となる植物の繊維を素材に彫刻やインスタレーション作品を制作しています。ひとつひとつの繊維が絡まることで成形される紙、その成り立ちについて思索を巡らせる中で、自分自身や周囲を構成する点と点の交わり、線や面についての考察が作品に積層されています。 盛永省治氏は、大工、家具製作を経て、カリフォルニアでウッドターニングという木工旋盤を用いた手法を学びました。大きな木材を削り出し、それぞれの個性を見出だしながら、肌触りや木目など木がもつ最も美しい表情を器やオブジェの表面に宿していきます。 繊維や木という素材が二人の手を介し、その質感、大きさ、形に、創意が綾なす肌理が与えられた作品をぜひご高覧ください。

この度、MARUEIDO JAPANでは半澤友美「Note」を開催いたします。半澤友美は、紙の成り立ちに着目し独自の造形作品を創り出しています。植物繊維の絡まりからなる紙は、その原料を幾重にも重ねると強固な物体となります。半澤は日本の紙漉（かみすき）の技法を応用し立体作品を制作してきました。半澤は紙と自己に向き合い続け、その都度自己を顧みる記録として、まるでノートを取るかのように制作を続けています。今展覧会タイトルにもなった「Note」のシリーズは、金網に幾重にも紙の繊維を絡ませ積み重ねられた作品です。金網の人を寄せつけない金属的な強さと、紙の柔らかさを同時に併せ持っています。時間と記録が集積された作品たちは、会場で佇み現代の碑のように見た者に何かを問い掛けて来ます。
MARUEIDO JAPAN is pleased to announce that it will hold an exhibition by Tomomi Hanzawa called Note. Tomomi Hanzawa creates unique sculptural art which is focused on the origins of paper. She uses the raw materials for paper, which is made from the pulp of plant fibers, and takes that pulp to build up layers to create a solid object. Hanzawa creates three dimensional works by applying Japanese paper making techniques. Last year, in the atrium gallery of the Pola Museum of Art in Hakone, her ambitious installation “The Histories of the Self” featured an eye-catching exhibition collection of hundreds of artworks focused on one subject. As could be seen at that exhibition, Hanzawa continues to confront both paper and herself, and she is pursuing the creation of art like a form of note-taking to record her own reflections at all times.Her “Note” series, which also the title of this exhibition, are artworks that consist of paper pulp layered on metal meshes. These artworks simultaneously unite the metallic strength of metal meshes which have characteristics that repel people, and the softness of paper.They are artworks which integrate time and records, and that ask questions of the viewer standing in the exhibition space, and who are looking at the art as if it is a modern monument. 「ポーラミュージアム アネックス展」は、公益財団法人ポーラ美術振興財団が、1996年以来実施している「若手芸術家の在外研究助成」を受けられた 方々の研究成果をご披露いただく展覧会であり、今回で16回展を迎える。展覧会のタイトルとして「真正と発気」という言葉が付されているが、 このイメージによって出品作が選ばれているわけではなく、監修者が3名のアーティストに出品依頼を行い、作品はいうまでもなく各アーティスト の創意に委ねられている。「真正と発気」という言葉に使われている「真正」とは ausenticity を訳したものであり、「発気」は aura からとられている。 アートの中には、素材の真正性を隠してしまうものもある。17世紀オランダの静物画などはその一例であろう。それらとは反対に、素材の真正が 構造を経て発気に至るまでその真正性の存在を明らかに留めているアートもある。この両義性もまた魅力である。 展覧会監修者 木島俊介(公益財団法人ポーラ美術振興財団 ポーラ美術館 館長)
The Pola Museum Annex Exhibitions have been organized since 1996 by the Pola Art Foundation for the purpose of showcasing the works produced by recipients of “Grants for Overseas Study by Young Artists.” This will be the 16th exhibition in the series. The exhibition is titled “Authenticity and Aura," but it is not merely a collection of works selected on the basis of this theme. Rather, the curator engaged three artists for the exhibition, giving each of them free reign with their works and ideas. In some works of art the "authenticity of the materials is latent. One example is the still life paintings of the Netherlands from the 17th century. In contrast, there is also art in which the authenticity of the materials is obviously preserved throughout the structure and even in the “aura” of the iwork. ポーラ美術館は、2017年10月に、現代美術を展示するスペース「アトリウム ギャラリー」をオープンし、平成8年よりポーラ美術振興財団が助成してきた若手芸術家たちを紹介する「HIRAKU Project」を開始しました。第9回目の展示として、「半澤友美 The Histories of the Self」展を開催します。
The “Hiraku Project” is conceived as a series of exhibitions introducing contemporary artworks by Pola Art Foundation Grant recipients. The exhibitions are to be held at the Atrium Gallery, recently established to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Pola Museum of Art. “Hiraku” translates as ‘open,’ in the sense of ‘responsive to new possibilities.’ We are pleased to present [Tomomi Hanzawa’s The Histories of the Self ] as the 9th exhibition in our HIRAKU Project.
